Mary Mars events
2003
In the fall of 2003, Mary’s children were taking an art class with their instructor, Ms. Becky, at the
Far East Community Center.Mary spied Becky's piano and Mozart sheet music and began to play.
With a twinkle in her eye, Becky suggested that Mary teach piano at the recreation center.
Ah... an idea was born.
The first piano class had three students who brought their own pianos and played in the kitchen!
2004
The next session, Winter 2004, there were over 20 students. It was clear
that there was a need for affordable music education in the community.
So Mary expanded as much as she could to include as many classes as possible.
In addition, Mary now provides in-class pianos for her students.
In summer 2004, an old meeting room used for storage at Far East was cleared out and painted,
creating a Music Room. By request, a pre-k piano classes for ages 4-6 was added. Then the program expanded
to Lazelle Woods Community Centers.
2005
In 2005, Westgate, and Schiller Community Centers were added to make affordable music education
more readily available for families across the city. By special request,
the drum class was offered and is available on Wednesdays at Far East Community Center.
2006
In 2006, Carriage Place Community Center was added to the program.
2007
In 2007, classes were offered to students playing violin, viola, cello or bass and guitar. Guitar classes
can be found at most locations and violin, viola, cello and bass classes can be found at
Whetstone Community Center..
2010
In 2010, Whetstone Community Center was added to the program and we are now in
6 Columbus Recreation Centers to provide more accessability to the program.
